Better systems. Clearer decisions. Internal consistency.

I help small and mid-sized organizations improve their operations, introduce technology and AI responsibly, and communicate complex matters with precision.

About

Operations, technology, and communications, considered as one.

I’m an independent consultant and writer based in Toronto. My primary work is helping organizations strengthen operations, introduce technology thoughtfully, turn complex decisions into practical action, communicate change with clarity and reassurance.

I work across strategy and implementation: Clarifying priorities, improving and documenting processes, strengthening internal systems, and supporting the people who will use them.

My background spans technology leadership, business operations, digital organizations, senior management, writing, speaking, and publishing. That combination lets me move between technical, operational, and people concerns without treating them as disconnected.

I work primarily with small and mid-sized businesses, consultancies, mission-driven organizations, publications, and independent professionals who need experienced support without building a large internal team.

Services

Practice areas

Senior judgment, clear systems, and hands-on implementation for work that intersects operations, technology, and human communications.

Primary practice

Operations and fractional executive consulting

I help organizations whose operations have become unclear, inconsistent, or difficult to scale. That may mean clarifying responsibilities, defining metrics and their usage, process design and documentation, coordinating cross-functional priorities, or providing ongoing fractional operational leadership.

  • Fractional COO and senior operational support
  • Operational assessments and priority setting
  • Roles, responsibilities, and decision-making structures
  • Policies, procedures, and process documentation
  • Management reporting and operational controls
  • Project leadership and cross-functional coordination
  • Organizational change and implementation support

AI, technology and workflow improvement

I help organizations identify appropriate applications for AI, design workable processes around them, and implement solutions with appropriate error checking and human oversight. The result is better and faster access to information, less repetitive work, and making and capturing consistent decisions within a sustainable and ethical framework.

  • AI opportunity assessment and adoption planning
  • AI-assisted workflow and prompt-system design
  • Responsible-use policies and governance
  • Software selection and implementation
  • Low-code automation, scripts, and API integrations
  • Knowledge-management and documentation systems
  • Quality control, maintainability, and training

Writing, editing, and strategic communications

My work as a writer and editorial strategist spans literary, journalistic and organizational contexts. I help publications, organizations, and individual writers develop and refine material that is coherent, precise, and suited to its audience. And as a cultural commentator, my unique perspective allows me to articulate viewpoints intended to provoke thought and incite action.

  • Editorial planning, commissioning, and publication management
  • Strategic consulting for writers and publishers
  • Substantive and structural editing
  • Writing, rewriting, and research
  • Manuscript evaluation and editorial consultation
  • Copy editing and proofreading
  • Articles, essays, reviews, and public-affairs commentary

Engagements

Ways to collaborate

Our work together can be structured around a defined project, a short advisory assignment, or ongoing fractional support.

Background

Decades of experience across disciplines, applied to one problem at a time.

Before making independent consulting my primary focus since 2024, I built experience across systems administration, IT leadership, digital marketing, business operations, organizational administration and senior leadership, supplementing hands-on work with education in data science, AI and machine learning, as well as conflict resolution and resource management and capacity planning.

I currently provide fractional Chief Operating Officer services to a Canadian business and technology consultancy. My role focuses on operations, administration, systems, organizational effectiveness, executive decision support, and AI enablement.

Alongside my operations business practice, I have maintained a long-standing communications career as an award-winning editor and author with rich and varied experience, both journalistic and literary, on the printed page and onscreen. I've written one well-received book, with others currently underdevelopment.

The disciplines reinforce one another: operational work benefits from technical fluency and precise communication; technical change benefits from organizational judgment; and complex ideas benefit from clear language.

Values

Why I'm here.

Several years ago, I discovered the Live Your Values card deck by Lisa Congdon and Andreea Niculescu. I return to it from time to time as a way of reflecting on what matters most to me.

While creating this website, I revisited the deck and found that four principles continue to shape both my work and the way I hope to move through the world.

  1. Stay curious

The way I see the world has changed continually throughout my life, and I expect it to keep changing. Every client, colleague, and friend has something to teach me. I approach my work with curiosity rather than certainty, remaining open to new ideas, new evidence, and better ways of thinking.

  2. Build trust

Meaningful work depends on trust. I strive to create environments where people feel safe to ask questions, share concerns, acknowledge uncertainty, and challenge assumptions. Better conversations lead to better decisions, stronger relationships, and more sustainable change.

  3. Use expertise responsibly

I've experienced both disadvantage and privilege, and both have shaped how I see the world. I believe expertise carries responsibility. I try to use mine in ways that reduce harm, broaden opportunity, and help organizations make thoughtful, ethical decisions.

  4. Make space for everyone

Better outcomes emerge when people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are genuinely included. I value environments where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, and where collaboration leaves room for humour, enjoyment, and the simple pleasure of working well together.
